it’s been forever and a day since i last posted on here. i’ve been great, life is good. many changes are taking place, many good things are on the horizon…. can i be any more vague? HA!
anyway, i’ve decided that it’s time to get serious about my health. again. i’m now 33 years old, and am only growing in circumference. this revelation came to a head two weeks ago when i had to buy a suit for a friend’s wedding and realized that my waistline is now a full ten inches larger than my inseam. this disappointed and depressed me to no end. really, my waist line 1/3 larger than my legs. ugh. so needless to say fatty here is about to get slim, come hell or high water.
this is my transparency. i’m 33 years old. i’m 5’9″ with a good pair of shoes 5’10″. when the scale doesn’t say “err” it tells me i’m between 215-210 on average (210.5 today). i’ve lead a sedentary lifestyle since getting out of high school. i’ve frequented crappy drive thru restaurants for the better part of the last 8 years with work. i’ve had 3 open heart surgeries before i was 8 years old. i had abused my body with various things for years and it is time for a change.
change is a hard word. baby steps aren’t going to cut it this time. i’m going to have to take a step back, hold my breath and jump over the edge. so here’s how/why i’m going to attempt to get it done.
1. i have started packing my lunch for work- it’s a bit of an adjustment, but i think i can make this work.
1.5 i’m also attempting to lean more vegetarian/vegan with my diet. Sorry McDonalds, quite frankly, your food sucks anyway.
2. for said lunches i’m eating better. more fruits, nuts, sensible sandwiches, plenty of water and most importantly: smaller portion sizes.
3. i’ve downloaded a few apps on my iphone to help track calories and train my body. the first is My Fitness Pal- this helps me keep track of my calorie intake. right now the plan is to take in just over 1500 calories a day. it seems do-able. it also keeps track of my weight and measurements. i’ll record these weekly to get a running tab as to where i stand. the second is called Couch to 5K. this is a pretty cool app designed to get me trained to run a 5k race without stopping. today was my first day running with this app. it works with me in run/walk intervals over the course of the next 9 weeks to get me 100% up to speed- and increase my endurance.
4. my job has challenged it’s employees to lose weight in the form of a contest. i have organized a team of 6 of my coworkers to see just how much weight we can lose in the next month, the winning team will get $5,000 donated to a charity of their choice and all team members of the winning team will get an iPad… that should be some motivation.
5. i can receive a discount on my health insurance if i get my BMI in line. right now i am at a BMI of 31. technically obese. if i can drop it down to 25 i will receive said discount- and also be way healthier. this means i have to lose 40 LBS to reach a “Healthy” BMI- sounds like i’ll be Hippie skinny- but if i’m to be healthy then that’s what i have to do.
6. i’m madly in love. hopefully to be married soon. if i’m going to be around to raise a family i need to get it together and get my butt in gear. she is a runner- this will be something i can share with her and hopefully we can share more years together as my big fat ass won’t be 6 feet under the ground.
if anyone reads this and has any suggestions as to more ways i can get fit, please share them here. i appreciate it.
